Blending with Brush Pens

Lettering artwork using brush pens

Brush lettering can be a fun form of self-expression, but after you try the traditional, or maybe even more modern, lettering styles, what else is there to learn? If you're in a bit of a rut with your lettering techniques or just want to try something new, this tutorial is for you.

I'm Gloria and today I'm going to be teaching you how to blend with two brush pens. Let's go!

Supplies

Do you have a home for all your brush pens yet? No? Check out this neat botanical canvas pen pouch, your pens will thank you.

Step 1: Decide on a word

Write the word in the lighter of the two colors you chose. Think outside the box, pick your favourite word or a word you just like the look of.

Step 2: Coloring

Now, take the darker brush pen and use it to paint the upper part of the letter. This part needs a bit more attention but the results will be worth it, trust me.

Step 3: Blending

Create a color gradient with the lighter brush pen by pulling the
darker color down with the lighter brush pen. Repeat these steps for all the letters. You might struggle a little to begin with, but you'll get the hang of it in no time!

Step 4: Result + Option

Great, you're done! Your base word lettering is completed.

You can also use a light and dark shade of blue or yellow and orange, for example. The important thing is that it is a light and darker color to
achieve a reaaally nice gradient.

Step 5: Shadow

To give the lettering even more pep, you can set a black shadow.
The word will really come in to its own because of the contrast and looks like it's about to POP off the paper.

Step 6: Add highlights

And your lettering is completed! If you like, you can add highlights with a white gel roller. That will create a really dreamy effect and make your piece even more interesting.

Have fun trying out this tutorial! Visit me on my Instagram page @_wolfskunst_ to show me your results, I'm looking forward to it.

Hello, my name is Gloria. I come from Germany and have been living in Austria with my family for 6 years. About 2 years ago I started with the lettering intensively and I really enjoy it. My great passion are flourishes. I like bright colors and love tattoos. When I'm not creative, I like to be outdoors with my family and play with our bullterrier.
