Designer Spotlight: Meet Brenda BakkerSep 09, 2022
By know you're probably familiar with our straight-talking Procreate wizz, but do you really know Brenda?
How did you get started doing art?
Ever since I was a young kid I was in to create everything from scratch. I’ve been drawing a lot but also at school I had fun with the creative classes. After school, I didn’t create for a lot of years. being busy with life. I must mention I have a short attention span and I’m easily bored. When my kids were young and went to school, I started painting again, then went on to nail styling. I wanted to create 3d nail art (not wearable though) and once I could do it (been there, done that) I went on to the next step: cake decoration. I did that for 8 years, creating wedding cakes, designing my own cake decoration moulds which sold worldwide. And once I got to the ceiling of that, I got bored again. I sold everything and started with hand lettering… after 2 years of lettering all the quotes I’ve seen, as you can guess, I got bored again. I got my first iPad from my husband after being grumpy for four days after a hand surgery and not being able to be creative. That was my first step into Procreate and drawing again, and now I've been enjoying it for almost 4 years.
What is your favorite medium to create with?
My favorite medium is Procreate but lately I want also to do more with watercolor and acrylic paint.
What is your favorite color?
For wearing, it is black; for drawing, it can change from teal to pink to green, depending on my mood mostly.
What is the one thing you like to have nearby when you create?
Besides my iPad and pencil, it would be my dog, a lovely 6 year old Bernese Mountain Dog named Fenna.
What most inspires you?
The thing that most inspires me is colors. i can see a gorgeous color and I want to draw something with that color in it.
How do you push through creative ruts?
I overcome that by creating something totally different: another style, another medium. That is why my feed is also very messy.
If you could only use 3 supplies for the rest of your life, what 3 items would you choose?
That would be easy, my iPad, my apple pencil and of course energy for the power. Within Procreate we have all the supplies we need.
What's your one hot tip for learners?
Always enjoy your journey no matter the results.
