Turn on Closed Captions for ANY Video OnlineMar 11, 2022
I'm going to show you how to turn on closed captions for ANY video online. This is something I've been waiting to do for soooo long. Accessibility should be an option for everyone without having to fork out extra cash, and I've been complaining about this for a hot minute. So, I'm super excited that the option to turn on closed captions for any (yes, ANY) video you watch online is now available. And I'm going to talk you through exactly how to do this. Best part? It's really easy and you don't need any plugins.
If you're not using Google Chrome already, download it because that's where you'll have the option to enable captions!
If you rather watch me explain and walk through these steps, I have a video for you, too.
Step 1: Open Chrome Settings
On the top of your screen, click on Chrome > Preferences. (If you're using a PC, this may be under Chrome > Settings.)
Step 2: Go to Advanced Settings
After you click on Chrome Preferences, a new browser tab will open. You'll see a Settings menu on the left side and you'll need to click the arrow drop down on Advanced.
Step 3: Go to Accessibility Settings
When you toggle down on Advanced, a dropdown menu will appear. Select Accessibility.
Step 4: Turn on Live Captions
Once you're in the accessibility menu, you will see several options that you might not have seen before! That's where the magic is hidden.
At the top, you'll see the option to toggle Live Caption on and...that's it! Once the speech recognition files are downloaded (takes only a few seconds!), you're good to go. At this point, any video you watch online will have closed captions enabled automatically. AND BONUS - it also works for podcasts!
Just look at those delightful live captions in action at the bottom of the image below!
