🜃  functional art

This hand-built ceramic piece can be used to accompany your painting journey. With its hand formed wells, this palette is perfect for watercolors, ink and anything else you desire. With a space to rest 3 paint brushes, it makes the painting process seamless and intuitive.

Use the space in the middle as your mixing ground. Not to mention, this palette makes for a perfect desk eye-candy.

🜃  earth is perfectly imperfect

Each piece created is meant to embrace imperfections, and each wobble, asymmetry, indent, and other handmade quality is intentionally preserved. Seeing earth formed by hand grounds me (no pun intended) and reminds me to celebrate my handmade process of creating art while I'm using a functional piece of art. I hope it helps to remind you to embrace your process in its entirety as well because your creative journey is so very special.

No two ceramic pieces I create are alike.

🜃 the process of this piece

Raw, wet clay is rolled out into an even slab and left to breathe for 3 days to establish the integrity of the shape, then carefully formed by hand to an organic-edge palette.

fire #1

After another 7 days of slow drying, the piece is ready for the first round of firing. It's carefully positioned in the kiln on small discs to protect it from cracking during any shrinkage due to the high fire temperature at 2200F (1204C) for 8 hours. It's then left in the kiln to cool for another 12 hours. This creates the bisque material from the raw clay for the perfect preparation to add glaze.

glaze

After the piece's first firing, its design is further planned out to determine where color and sheen is added. Once a resistant wax is applied to where the raw clay will remain exposed, glaze is mixed to a meticulous consistency that will evenly bond with the bisque material. The piece is then hand painted with glaze 3 times, each time letting the piece fully dry in between coats.

fire #2

After the piece is glazed, it heads into the kiln again for another round. When the second round in the kiln is complete, this beauty revealed its finished result for the first time.

finely sand

While the piece is "finished" after a final firing, there are finishing touches that are oftentimes missed in ceramics--the most important being a light sanding to the bottom the piece to soften the gritty texture.

After this rewarding process of playing with mud, a functional piece of art is ready for use.
