Meet the Artists: TPL Design Team 2023/2024

I've been holding this secret from you for a little while and I'm so excited to finally be able to announce our Design Team Artist line for 2023/2024. You might see some familiar faces, too 😉

Without further ado, please welcome our new Design Team 🥳 Read on to learn a bit more about them and see what to expect from us in the coming months (got a tutorial request? Let us know!)

Meet...Alicia Bruce

We first introduced Alicia to our Design Team last year and have become completely obsessed with her colorful work that is so full of life.

Did you know that...

Alicia was named after a hurricane and later became a meteorologist! 🌪️

What is you favorite art medium at the moment?

It bounces between gouache and digital, I think because both of them allow me to play with bright, opaque colors in different ways. Lately I've been doing a lot of digital work because I've been traveling a lot, and so I've been able to draw on my iPad from airplanes or cafes around the world.

What advice would you give someone that is just starting out on their art journey?

Practice makes progress. Honestly, so many people comment on how I'm talented or that they wish they could draw or paint. I've always been creative, but I can assure you that my work from 5 years ago is a far cry from my current work. And 5 years from now it'll have progressed even more! You've got to put the time in, make the crappy art, and know that it'll never be perfect, but it *will* get better and better.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming year in the TPL Design Team?

I'm really stoked about being part of such an intimate team, and humbled to have been welcomed back to the TPL family again. I feel so at home here, able to embrace my goofiness and love of color and my ADHD nature and know that I'm in good company. I can't wait to see what we all accomplish and how we grow over this year together!

What is you favorite art medium at the moment?

I’m currently obsessed with my iPad. I have been looking for the way I can recreate my favorite “gouache + colored pencils “ style, but with the iPad. And that has made me get hung up on it.

What advice would you give someone that is just starting out on their art journey?

Cliché, but: don’t worry about what others are doing. Just do you, and also forget about “your style”. Experiment and play with different ways to do things and you’ll get to your style much quicker.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming year in the TPL Design Team?

I’m really excited to come back as part of the team, and share how much I’ve learned over the last year and a half. I want people to get joy from creating art.

What is you favorite art medium at the moment?

I've recently fallen in love with gouache. I love that it is portable like watercolor but more opaque and vibrant.

What advice would you give someone that is just starting out on their art journey?

Don't throw things away, you'll want to look back at them later. Also, do what makes you happy, not what everyone else is doing.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming year in the TPL Design Team?

Working with such an amazing and creative bunch of people!

Meet...Julie Malizia

At this point, we consider Julie to be an integral part of the TPL Design Team since it will be her 3rd year in a row (and we are still as obsessed with her art as we were before).

Did you know that...

Julie gets called Julia so often that she has stopped correcting people. Her name is not and has never been Julia, but she now thinks of her as her artistic alter ego 🧑‍🎨

What is you favorite art medium at the moment?

Lately, I have been loving making mixed media collages! My current season of life really doesn't allow me a lot of undisturbed art time, so I love being able to dig into my collage toolkit (which is essentially a box full of scraps) and piece something together. It's also been a really fun, low-stress way to experiment with new techniques, colors, compositions, etc. It's also been really therapeutic for my inner child that was constantly chopping up magazines.

What advice would you give someone that is just starting out on their art journey?

Just start with the medium that calls to you! I started out with a few Tombow markers and Instagram lettering tutorials. They were really, really bad! But that's okay! Once you start flexing your artistic muscles your creativity will start to flourish. My journey has taken me from brush lettering and line drawings to watercolor lettering and florals, all the way to the absolutely unhinged abstract pieces that I have come to love and resonate with. You truly never know where your art will take you so just hop on where you can and enjoy the ride!

What are you most excited about for the upcoming year in the TPL Design Team?

I am honored to be a part of the design team again. Nothing brings me more joy than to share my art and inspire others to make art, too. I can't wait to see what this year brings!
